Hazardous environments are areas where flammable liquids, gases or vapors or combustible dust exist in sufficient quantities to produce an explosion or fire. In such environments, specially designed equipment and techniques are used to protect against the risks of flammable and explosive materials. Working in hazardous areas can be made safer by using automation systems.

The 2014/34/EU directive, known as the Atex equipment directive, contains the conditions and requirements for equipment and systems that can be used in potentially explosive atmospheres. 99/92/EC directive should also be well known and understood in order to develop and implement systems that will operate in hazardous environments. Directive 99/92/EC addresses the requirements for the protection of workers who will work in potentially explosive atmospheres.
